The 'Texas Juneteenth: Amazing History, Enduring Legacy' program set for June 8, celebrates the significant moment on June 19, 1865, when enslaved Texans were informed of their freedom, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. Hosted at Pioneer Farms, the event includes readings of General Granger's proclamation in Galveston, history presentations, and an arts program spotlighting the resilient achievements of formerly enslaved Texans.
Starting at 9 a.m., attendees can tour the restoration-in-progress Dodson House, leading to a special arts and history program from 10 to 11 a.m. at Wessels dance hall. The event aims to promote the preservation of African American heritage in Central Texas, combining historical insights with cultural exhibitions. It's a collaborative effort by the Travis County African-American Cultural Commission, the Travis County Historical Commission, and Pioneer Farms, offering a poignant remembrance and celebration of Juneteenth's enduring legacy. Participation is free with prior RSVP.
