Native Species Awareness Day at the Zoo invites visitors to appreciate the local fauna, emphasizing the importance of native species. The event is scheduled from 9 a.m. to noon in the Oklahoma Trails habitats, where attendees can witness animal enrichment activities, engage in caretaker discussions, and meet the beloved mascot Smokey Bear.
Guests can participate in a citizen science project by assisting Zoo experts with the tagging of monarch butterflies. Local conservation organizations will provide valuable information about how individuals can contribute to wildlife and habitat preservation in Oklahoma.
Additionally, the Oklahoma Zoological Society will offer plush adoptions of native species, such as otters, coyotes, and grizzly bears, with proceeds supporting The Nature Conservancy. A plant sale led by the Zoo's horticulture team will also take place in the Entry Plaza during the same hours, providing visitors with the opportunity to acquire various plants and receive advice on fall gardening and landscaping.
Participation in the day's activities is included with admission to the Zoo, making it an accessible and educational event for everyone interested in local wildlife and conservation efforts.
