LaFortune Park in Tulsa has a rich history that dates back to 1920, originating from the Tulsa County Poor Farm. The farm provided food, health services, and shelter to those in need until it became outdated and costly following the introduction of the national welfare system in 1935. As the farm's relevance diminished, J.A. LaFortune, an oilman, saw potential in the property. He donated $250,000 to Tulsa County in 1958 with the aim of transforming the land into a public park as a way to give back to the community that had supported him.
After considerable efforts, LaFortune Park was inaugurated on October 16, 1960, becoming the first county park in Oklahoma. Spanning 270 acres, the park is home to over 700 trees, 11 ponds, and attracts more than 100,000 visitors annually. Its extensive facilities include an 18-hole championship golf course, a lighted driving range, a pro shop, and Oklahoma's only lighted 18-hole par 3 course. The park offers a beautiful and versatile setting suitable for a variety of events with both indoor and outdoor spaces available.
Adjacent to the golf course lies the Case Tennis Center at LaFortune Park, a well-regarded athletic facility established in 1970. Initially comprising just six courts, the center has expanded significantly to include 21 lighted outdoor courts and three air-conditioned indoor courts, complemented by a full-service pro shop and locker rooms. This dedicated tennis center further enhances the recreational offerings of LaFortune Park.
