Waterloo Greenway is set to host a free celebration for Día de los Muertos, presented by Siete Family Foods, at Waterloo Park on November 1. The festivities will run from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. and will feature a variety of cultural displays, including community altars, live music, and dance performances.
A significant highlight of the event is the community ofrenda, supported by LALO Tequila. These altars are essential to Día de los Muertos, serving as welcoming symbols for spirits returning to the world of the living. The Moody Amphitheater stage will be transformed into a community altar by artist Jose Arrieta Hinojos of Teocochitl Designs. Attendees will have the opportunity to place images and decorations in remembrance of their dearly departed.
Another notable feature is the Alebrije Altar, supported by Love, Tito's. Alebrijes, which are colorful, fantastical creatures depicted in Mexican folk art, symbolize spirit guides in many traditions. Inspired by the spirit of DogJo, Tito's Handmade Vodka encourages visitors to honor their pets with a special altar designed by artist Ernest Ramirez.
The evening will include diverse performances starting with DJ Manny Mo at 6:00 PM, followed by Ballet Folklorico MariCruz at 7:00 PM. Mariachi Corazon de Tejas will take the stage at 8:00 PM, and the event will culminate with a performance by Danza Azteca Guadalupana at 9:00 PM. Throughout the evening, attendees will have moments of quiet reflection to remember their loved ones, creating a space for honoring and celebrating those who have passed.
