Dia de los Muertos, or Day of the Dead, is a vibrant and cherished tradition celebrated in Mexico and Latin America, transforming mourning into a celebration of life and death. This year's festivities will take place in Elgin on November 1 and 2, drawing friends and families together to remember and honor those who have passed away.
On November 1, the Elgin Public Library and the downtown area will host a variety of activities from 5 to 10:30 p.m. Visitors can explore traditional altars on display at the Clever Tiger, where a Community Altar will invite families to contribute notes or photos that commemorate their loved ones. The entertainment lineup includes a strolling mariachi band, Ballet Folklorico dancers, fire performers, Aztec dancers, and more.
A Mexican-themed market will feature food, clothing, and arts and crafts, complemented by music from a DJ. Attendees are encouraged to arrive in costume, enhancing the festive atmosphere. The celebration will spread throughout downtown Elgin and The Clever Tiger, providing multiple options for engagement.
A costumed walking parade is scheduled to begin at the library at 6:15 p.m. In addition, the Elgin Library will offer painted sugar skulls and craft activities starting at 5 p.m. For family-friendly fun, Elgin Parks and Recreation will facilitate games at the recently expanded Veterans Memorial Park. As the evening progresses, The Cumbia Movement will perform on stage at 8:30 p.m., bringing music to the celebration until 10:30 p.m. Guests are invited to bring lawn chairs and dancing shoes to participate in the joyous occasion.
