The UMLAUF Gallery is proud to showcase Floating Forest, a pioneering sound-responsive light installation, marking the first collaborative endeavor by a group of Texas-based women artists and designers. This site-specific exhibition evolved from an initial concept submitted to the 2023 Design Shine competition, organized in partnership with AIA-Austin to highlight emerging talent. Despite adjustments from an outdoor to an indoor setup, the team's innovative proposal led to an invitation to create a more ambitious project. The installation reflects the UMLAUF's dedication to nurturing emerging local artists, a tradition inspired by Charles Umlauf's mentorship legacy.
Floating Forest introduces a unique audio-visual experience, designed to be accessible and environmentally friendly, featuring 24 tall, light-embedded wool felt 'trees' that respond dynamically to gallery sounds. Engineered with sustainability in mind, the materials were carefully chosen for their low carbon footprint. This immersive installation fosters a sense of community, wonder, and interaction, allowing visitors to actively contribute to the evolving ambiance.
