The Oklahoma Folklife Festival is happening on Saturday, October 5, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., offering a free, immersive experience that celebrates diverse cultures and traditions. This event encourages visitors to participate in activities like dancing, singing, crafting, and tasting a variety of foods. The festival highlights what the American Folklife Center describes as the 'everyday and intimate creativity' passed down through generations, offering a unique way for attendees to engage with different cultural expressions.
Throughout the day, attendees will be able to enjoy performances, sample food from vendors, and access educational resources. Crafts and activities are available for all ages, making it a family-friendly event. For those interested in exploring more, museum galleries will be open with discounted admission at $5 per person.
The festival will feature a range of performances, beginning at 10 a.m. with groups such as the Hung Viet Dragon & Lion Dance Association, Oklahoma Fancy Dancers, Aspiring Attitudes, and Yumare. At 11 a.m., Cowboy Jim Garling, Carmela's Heart Flamenco, Nritya Arpan Dance School, and Guatemaltecos en Oklahoma will take the stage. Noon performances include Everest Culture and Entertainment, the Panamanian Society, Everything Goes Dance Studio, and Alianza Ecuatoriana. At 1 p.m., Will Rogers and el Charro Juan, the Oklahoma City Ballet, and Clips-N-Hips will perform. The festival concludes with a 2 p.m. performance featuring Scottish Highland Dance, OMANYE – Afro music from Ghana, and Norahua Mexican Folklore.
Visitors can also explore the annual Research Center Book Sale, which offers rare and out-of-print books, magazines, comics, and vinyl records. Additional collectibles available for purchase include puzzles, Oklahoma-themed playing cards, reproductions of historic posters, maps, and photographs.
