Austin's Congress Avenue Bridge hosts America's most famed bat colony, with numbers ranging from 500,000 to 1.5 million Brazilian free-tailed bats. These bats find shelter in narrow crevices between the bridge's concrete beams, which also facilitate an ideal temperature for rearing their young.

The spectacle of their mass emergence forms columns visible over a mile away, sometimes reaching thousands of feet into the sky. These awe-inspiring columns can include up to five streams of bats, making it a notable natural event in the heart of Austin.
